Great energy here in Mint College in Taguig City, Manila where 250+ developers, designers, entrepreneurs and ideas gathered this weekend for Manila’s first ever Startup Weekend in the Philippines.
60 ideas were pitched Friday night. It was interesting to see some similar ideas to ones pitched at SWSG3 including a Startup Weekend online concept. The crowd was filled with so much energy that flowed through the pitches and the interactions during voting. There were some clear favorites like a spooky interactive VooDoo doll app- some ideas were so popular that you couldn’t see the name of the project under all of the post-it notes! About 25 ideas were chosen by the crowd.
There was some creative recruiting going on during team formation. Alec here found a corner to advertise his recruitment needs and left post-its with his phone number at the spot so that people could call him if they wanted to join the Passion Box party. Alec also introduced yet one more reason to attend Startup Weekend.

Another thing that stood out at SWManila was the community effort around the event. There were so many volunteers running around to make sure the event ran smoothly. It was particularly inspiring to see new faces on Day 2, friends of participants who saw calls for designers/specific skill-sets on twitter and gave up their Saturday to come out to Taguig City to do what they could to help get some projects up and running.
28 teams pitched on Day 3. Everyone who made it to pitch time with a working Demo deservers a huge round of applause for their success.
